Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Volunteers from the Girls Scouts, Handley High School Interact Club, Boys and Girls Club and interested community youth, met at the United Way office, on the 18th, from 10-12 noon, to distribute useful items to families in the North End. Donated items inclued; light bulbs from Winchester GE Lamp Plant, paper products donated by Southeastern Container, FamilyWize prescriptions discount cards and UW Community Service Directories. The Handley Interact Club packed the distribution bags on Thursday, January 14th and January 18th.
United Way organized the annual project as a way to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King and to recognize his efforts to encourage service to others. In 1968, in his sermon, "The Drum Major Instinct", Dr. King noted that..."everybody can be great, because everybody can service".

2009 Volunteer of the Year
John Hudson
Accidental banker…song and dance man…community volunteer. John Hudson is well known in his community of Berryville as well as across the Northern Shenandoah Valley. We have seen him perform with Dixie Rhythm at Apple blossom, highlighted in United Way public service spots and promoting his employer, Bank of Clarke County.
John grew up in Boyce and attended Longwood College where he majored in music. In 1983 he took what he thought was a temporary position as a security guard at Bank of Clarke’s Boyce office and subsequently moved up the ladder to become Senior Vice President and Marketing Director. A young John Hudson listened to his father talk of the good work of non-profit organizations, particularly The Salvation Army. This led to an impressive history of service…22 years on the Salvation Army Board, 19 years and current president of the Clarke County Education Foundation and 4 years as the Clarke representative to the Area Agency on Aging. For over 18 years, John played Timpani for the Clarke County Community Band and its spinoff Dixie Rhythm. He is a volunteer entertainer at many local non-profit agencies and nursing homes. He has served with United Way as a Campaign Division leader and has helped coordinate the bank’s Day of Caring team since 1997. This song and dance man posing as a Banker has seen the needs of his community and gets involved to give back what he can for the greatest good.
